Dear Reader,

In this turbulent world, where Russia has launched a full-scale war against Ukraine and the whole of Europe is reviewing its energy reserves, it is nice to see that at least in fisheries there has been no major collapse. 2021 was a normal year for Estonian fisheries; as always, dedicated people and businesses took care of our food security.

As always, I end the foreword to the yearbook with a call to eat fish. I would also like to thank all the authors, editors and linguists as well as the publisher with whom I have had the pleasure of working with for twelve years to produce these yearbooks.

Estonian Fishery 2021 veebi kaas

As the Fisheries Information Centre project will come to an end with the end of the funding period of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, this yearbook may be the last. Time will tell if and how we will continue.

The Estonian fisheries sector is strong. If we can make the right decisions and use European support funds properly, develop processing and extend the value chain, our fisheries will survive even when the support ends. However, we must not forget that our fisheries rely on natural resources. There has been no quantitative leap forwards in fish farming, and as long as the government maintains its passive (to put it mildly) attitude towards the establishment of marine fish farms, there will be no positive development. A sector that relies on natural resources needs to ensure that stocks are sustainable and remain available for future generations. It is therefore essential that the fisheries sector considers the state of fish stocks on an ongoing basis, not just when offshore wind farms are being planned.

Yearbook 'Estonian Fishery 2021' can be ordered from Fisheries Information Centre (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Yearbook is free of charge.
