 Dear reader,

this yearbook is not some bestseller that you grab and do not put aside before the last page is read. The hundred or so pages of the book present tables and figures describing one of Estonia's characteristic and important industries in 2018 and comparing it with previous years. Let me stress once again that behind all these dry numbers is the work of real people and that we all should hope for the continuous improvement of the numbers. The easiest way to ensure this is to eat domestic fish.

Eat fish and, whenever possible, Estonian fish!

Käsiraamat on mõeldud õppevahendina kalakasvataja kutset omandavatele õppijatele. Eestis õpetatakse kalakasvatust kutseõppe tasemel Järvamaa Kutsehariduskeskuse (JKHK) Särevere õppekohas. Eesti Maaülikoolis õpetatakse kalandust ja vesiviljelust vesiviljeluse ning hüdrobioloogia ja kalanduse õppetoolides ühise õppekava järgi.

This yearbook is the sixth already and, for the sake of saving time and effort, the introduction from an earlier yearbook could be used, introducing some minor changes.

The Fisheries Information Centre has prepared yet another yearbook – the fifth already – of Estonian fishery. Previously, the Information Centre has published yearbooks for 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Since there was a nearly year-long pause in the activities of the Information Centre between two budgetary periods, information for 2014 was not published on time; however, we cover that information with the data for 2015 in this publication. This gives an opportunity to compare these two years, as well as collate the data for these years with information on previous years, in order to provide a longer-term review of fish stocks and economic indicators.

Valminud on raamat "Kalakasvatus. Perspektiivsed liigid". Raamatus on käsitletud kalade geneetikat ja aretust, ahvena-, angerja-, angersäga-, paalia-, koha-, siia- ja tuurakasvatust.

Eesti vesiviljeluse sektori arengustrateegia aastateks 2014–2020 käsitleb muu hulgas sektori tulevikuvisiooni ja eesmärke. Ekspordi kasvu peamise võimalusena nähakse strateegias just Eesti viljelustingimustega sobivate ja suure välisnõudlusega liikide, nagu angerjas, jõevähk, tuurlased ja siig, ning täiesti uute perspektiivsete liikide viljelemist ning seda toetavat arendustööd. Võimalik, et menukaks kujunevad hoopis seni kasvatuses vähe levinud kalad, nagu ahven ja koha. Seepärast tahavad raamatu autorid anda panuse strateegias nimetatud probleemide lahendamisse.

The Fisheries Information Centre has prepared yet another yearbook – the fourth already – of Estonian fishery. Previously, the Information Centre has published yearbooks for 2010, 2011 and 2012. This yearbook, whose structure follows that of its predecessors, gives an overview of the state of Estonian fishery in 2013 and compares it to previous years. By contrast to the preceding yearbooks, this one lacks the chapter on "Ichthyologic and fishery-related research projects" at the end of the book, because the Information Centre has published "Aastatel 2008-2013 valminud kalandus-uuringud" (Fishery Research 2008-2013) as a separate book, which is available to all interested parties, both in hard copy and on our website at www.kalateave.ee.

Raamatu "Läänemeri" on koostanud bioloogiadoktor Evald Ojaveer. Raamatus on süvitsi käsitletud Läänemere ajaloolist arengut, tänapäevaseid abiootilisi tingimusi, looduslikke regionaalseid süsteeme, elustikku, keskkonna ja elustiku dünaamikat, teisi merehüvesid ja nende kasutamist, aga ka rahvusvahelist koostööd Läänemere varude hindamisel ning haldamisel.

Once again, the Fisheries Information Centre has a great pleasure to issue a yearbook that describes the state of Estonian fishery and to conclude that fishery continues to be a viable branch of the economy despite all the difficulties, whether natural or economic.  It is believed that 2012 was a fairly busy and challenging year for the Estonian fishery sector. Estonian Fishery 2012 compiled by Fisheries Information Centre (Department of Fish Biology and Fisheries of the Estonian Marine Institute, University of Tartu) provides an overview of Estonian fisheries in 2012. The book is meant for anyone who wishes to have an overview of the status of Estonian fishery – status of fish stocks, landings, aid etc. Under scope are distant-water fishery, Baltic Sea fisheries (including Baltic trawling and coastal fishery), inland fisheries (fisheries in Lake Võrtsjärv and Lake Peipsi). Included are also recreational fisheries, aquaculture, fisheries aid and larger scientific projects.

Yearbook "Estonian Fishery 2011" contains data that characterise the state of Estonian fisheries in 2011 with a focus on comparing them with the situation in 2010. There is also an emphasis on comparison with data from earlier, albeit to a lesser extent, as the book "Estonian Fishery 2010" published last year provided an overview of, among others, the periods that had not been covered in previous years. We have still sought to present previous years' data in the tables and graphs, as the previous publication may no longer be available to all interested parties.

Kalanduse teabekeskus pakkus tuge Eesti Maaülikooli kalakasvatuse osakonnale "Vee korduvkasutusega vesiviljeluse juhend" toimetamisel ja väljaandmisel. Tõlke eest vastutas kalakasvatuse osakond, aga oluline on ka väljaantavate raamatute hea keeleline kvaliteet ja ühene mõistetavus ning tsiteerides kalakasvatuse professorit Tiit Paaverit „... tarvis on ka õpikuid, mis annaksid algteadmised ja hoiaksid eestikeelset terminoloogiat."

The book is meant for anyone who wishes to have an overview of the status of Estonian fishery – status of fish stocks, landings, aid etc. Under scope are distant-water fishery, Baltic Sea fisheries (including Baltic trawling and coastal fishery), inland fisheries (fisheries in Lake Võrtsjärv and Lake Peipsi). Included are also recreational fisheries, aquaculture, fisheries aid and larger scientific projects.

Head of Fisheries Information Centre, Toomas Armulik, has stated, Fishery has been greatly influenced by the overall decline in fish stocks, including those of the Baltic Sea, over the last decade.

In a situation where fish stocks cannot be expected to increase significantly in the near future and first sale prices have remained relatively stable for most fish species for many years, while the prices of a number of expenditure items (fuel, energy, labour costs etc.) are on the rise, fishermen face a choice of increasing fishing efficiency by providing added value to the catch, or giving up fishing altogether.

Indeed, the number of people involved in fishing has declined remarkably over the past five years, with the number of those for whom fishing is the only source of income decreasing gradually.
